During one of the training sessions held with the association Munay Pallay Awaqkuna from Accha Alta, we experienced a moment that we remember with special affection. While conducting a session on price analysis, we noticed that one of the weavers consistently obtained a different result from the rest of the group.
Although she carefully followed every instruction, her final calculation never matched. Upon reviewing her work more closely, we discovered that she had the curious habit of reversing numbers: if she had to write 246, she wrote 264, and so on.
Beyond the anecdote itself, that moment became a reminder of the true purpose of our trainings: learning together with patience, respect, and joy. Her dedication and enthusiasm reflected the same commitment with which the weavers intertwine threads on their looms. Each participant, with their own pace and way of understanding, enriches the collective learning process —just as in weaving, where every strand contributes its color and texture to the final creation.
On another occasion, we received a textile piece that required some adjustments. We returned it to the association with a small note attached, explaining the mistake that needed correction. Days passed, and when the piece came back… it was the same, with the same note still attached!
Curious, we asked the weaver why she hadn’t corrected. She looked at the masking tape for a few seconds, as if trying to decipher its meaning, until finally, with a shy smile, she said:
—“It’s because I don’t know how to read.”
That moment moved us deeply. It reminded us that behind every textile lie stories of effort, learning, and diverse realities. It also reaffirmed the importance of accompanying each process with empathy and understanding —ensuring that communication, like weaving itself, is built thread by thread, through trust and mutual respect.
