Description

The Next Generation Takes the Loom

For centuries, traditional Andean textiles have been a symbol of cultural identity and resilience. Yet, in recent decades, their survival has faced significant challenges. Guardians of the Textile Heritage, the CTTC’s latest exhibition, tells the inspiring story of how young weavers are reclaiming and revitalizing this ancient art.

What began more than 30 years ago with 20 young artisans in Chinchero has grown into a thriving network of over 240 children across the Cusco region. Through community effort and with the support of CTTC and its financial partners, the Young Weavers Group has become more than a tradition—it’s a space for learning, socialization, and cultural pride. This exhibition immerses visitors in the creativity, dedication, and joy that these young artisans bring to their craft.

An Exhibition Beyond Textiles

More than a display of textiles, Guardians of the Textile Heritage highlights the lived experiences of young weavers. Visitors will see powerful images of children enjoying their time at the loom, sharing knowledge, and strengthening community bonds. The exhibition challenges the misconception that traditional weaving is an obligation, showing instead that it is a choice—one made with passion and a deep sense of continuity. Through their own voices, young artisans express how weaving is not just a skill but a cherished tradition they embrace, inspired by the elders who came before them.

The Weaving Journey: From Learner to Leader

At the heart of this exhibition is the weaving journey itself. From a child’s first simple designs to the intricate mastery of sacred Andean motifs, each piece on display tells a story of patience, growth, and identity.

Maysharon, a 20-year-old weaver from Patabamba and an intern in CTTC’s Education Department, reflects on her own journey:

"My mom was the first to teach me how to weave, although I already knew how to warp—I would help her with that."

Currently a ninth-semester education student at UNSAAC, Maysharon has played a key role in mounting four exhibitions this year as part of Window to Weaving Heritage, CTTC’s exhibition program. She also recently led a spinning workshop for the Young Weavers Group across different weaving associations in Cusco, passing on essential knowledge to the next generation. Her story is a testament to how Andean weaving is not just being preserved but evolving through the dedication of young leaders who bridge tradition and innovation.

Through initiatives like this, CTTC ensures that Andean textile heritage continues to thrive, woven into the fabric of life for generations to come.
